This year has been exceptionally difficult for the Chinese economy, and despite the rebound of GDP growth to 3.9% in the third quarter, the growth outlook remains challenging due to several headwinds, including: (i) the disruption of COVID-related restrictions; (ii) the property downturn; (iii) subdued domestic demand due to persisting consumer confidence weakness; (iv) a moderation of external demand due to the global growth slowdown; and (v) an increasingly challenging geopolitical environment characterized by growing antagonism against China.
It is against this backdrop that the 20th National Party Congress of the Communist Party of China was held. General Secretary of the CPC and President of China, Xi Jinping, emerged stronger than ever after having been appointed for a third time at the helm of the Party – and therefore the government. With his position as the 'core' of the CPC having been enshrined in the Party Charter, it stands to reason that his vision – i.e. 'Xi Jinping Thought' – will determine the country's development pathway and have a significant impact on its business landscape.
Against a backdrop of mounting economic headwinds and changing political priorities, what is the outlook for China's business landscape and what are the implications for foreign MNCs? The Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China is gladly to invite Alfredo Montufar-Helu, Head of the China Center for Economics and Business at The Conference Board to talk about:
